An Epidemiologic Survey on the Farmers¢¥ Syndrome in Rural Chonnam Area

Abstract
This Survey was conducted to investigate the variable factors related to-this Syndrome as well as the prevalence and frequencies of 8 symptoms of the Farmers¢¥ Syndrome. Randomly selected 119 men and 121 women n rural Chonnam area were individually interviewed with questionnaire during 15 days in November 1981.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. Those who constantly having waist pains and shoulder stiffness were the highest as 46.3% and 43.1% respectively. Only 9.1% of all study population were constantly having nycturia.
2. Female farm workers were suffering from all these symptoms more than male farm workers and the frequencies of waist pains, numb limbs and sleeplessness were significantly high in female population(p<0.05).
3. As expected, older age groups were having those symptoms more frequently than younger age groups except abdominal fullness.
4. The prevalence of the Farmers¢¥ Syndrome increases as the age of farmers does. The differences of prevalence among all different age groups were statistically significant (p<0.01).
The overall prevalence rate of Farmers¢¥ Syndrome of the study population was 300 per 1, 000 and this rate in male and female were 252 and 347 respectively.
5. Average Farmers¢¥ Syndrome Score of total farm workers was 4.9 and in male and female were 4.2 and 5.5 respectively.
6. The positive rate of Farmers¢¥ Syndrome were high in over 70 age in male and over 60 age in female.
